How much to shrink

A good balance for most files.

Each page is rebuilt as a compressed picture. That shrinks scans and photo-heavy PDFs a lot, but the text can then no longer be selected or searched. A PDF that is mostly text is usually already small — it may not get smaller.

Frequently asked questions

How does it make the PDF smaller?

Each page is redrawn as a compressed picture at a lower resolution and the PDF is rebuilt from those pictures. That shrinks scans and photo-heavy PDFs a lot.

Will I still be able to select or search the text?

No. Because pages become pictures, the text is no longer selectable or searchable. Keep your original if you need that.

Why didn't my PDF get smaller?

PDFs that are mostly text are already tiny, and rebuilding them as pictures can even make them bigger. The tool tells you when that happens — keep the original, or try Strong.

Which level should I choose?

Recommended suits most files. Light keeps pages sharper (200 dpi). Strong makes the smallest file (100 dpi) with softer pages.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. It is compressed in your browser. The limits are 100 MB and 300 pages.
